About Walsall

A historic market town with a proud heritage.


Walsall is a historic market town located in the heart of the West Midlands, England. Situated approximately 8 miles north-west of Birmingham and 6 miles east of Wolverhampton, Walsall has a proud industrial heritage and a strong sense of community.

Historically part of Staffordshire, Walsall developed into an important industrial town during the Industrial Revolution, becoming internationally recognised for the manufacture of saddles, leather goods, chains and metalworking products. This rich heritage remains an important part of the town’s identity today.

With a population of over 67,000 residents within the town and more than 269,000 across the borough, Walsall continues to evolve through investment, regeneration and community-led initiatives that support local growth and opportunity.

The town has undergone significant redevelopment since the 1970s, transforming into a modern and ambitious borough while preserving its historic character and identity.

Barr Beacon is one of the West Midlands’ most iconic viewpoints and is famously recognised as the highest point between itself and the Ural Mountains in Russia.
